不知道大家在逛街时有没有发现，传统的金饰银饰店已逐渐的丧失竞争优势，而被一些世界品牌(如Tiffany & Co.)或区域品牌(Just Gold)所取代，而我们选购戒指或项链的眼光也越来越高，讲究质感与高雅的设计。的确，人们鉴赏的品味随着工商业日益繁荣与信息传播迅速，而逐渐与日俱增。珠宝设计这门课程也因人们对于珠宝品质和设计水准要求不断提升下，成为一个众所嘱目的热门科系。因此为了增进设计技能，珠宝设计人才的培养变得十分重要，并期以美术与艺术素养的训练为基础，加强珠宝相关知识与设计能力，使珠宝设计与美术合而为一，培养合乎社会需求之珠宝设计人才。至国外进修珠宝设计课程，有三个选择，分为大学设计课程(Bachelor Degree)，插班大学设计科系或珠宝设计硕士课程(Graduate Program，分为M.F.A和M.A)，请详见申请资格一栏。而几个名词也和珠宝设计(Jewelry Design)习习相关，如Metal arts(金属艺术)和Metalsmithing(金属工艺)，这是在找寻学校信息时应该注意的。

Bachelor Program(学士课程) : 认可的高中毕业，TOEFL，修业四年。

插班Bachelor Program(插班学士课程) : 大学念一年以上或大学已毕业，TOEFL，修业两年半至三年，视学分抵修程度而定。

Graduate Program(硕士课程M.F.A, M.A) : 认可的大学毕业，TOEFL当然是必备的，GRE通常知名度高的综合性大学会要求，艺术学院的比较少要求GRE，另外学校一定要求的是Portfolio，即是作品集，内容可包括素描、油画、动画、网页、珠宝设计、金属设计作品或可展现艺术天份和珠宝设计的创作，通常以幻灯片、CD或彩色影印寄送给学校，大约需16-20张作品左右。大学有金属与珠宝设计基础的修业两年至两年半，没有金属与珠宝设计基础的修业两年半至三年。M.F.A的毕业学分要求较多。 

Jewelry Design学生毕业后的就业，可以成立个人设计工作室成为设计师，可成为宝石鉴定家、珠宝商、流行配件设计师(Fashion Accessory Designer)、金饰设计师(Goldsmith)、银饰设计师(Silversmith)，也可任职珠宝公司担任设计师，担任艺术设计科系或坊间珠宝设计学院的教授及教师。
